puzzle 51: Seaside (Beach scene from Linda Nelson Stocks "2009 Folk Art Calendar")

piece count: 314

measured size: 11 1/4 x 13 1/4"

date cut: 10 November 09

notables: signature piece, lobster, moose, bear dropout, kite, partial color line cut

disposition: Dan (for a Christmas present for his mother)

All in all, I think this is a very nice puzzle - but oh, what a series of little mistakes and disasters!

First, the good -

Dan’s mother was raised in Maine and he thought this print from Linda Nelson Stocks would evoke good childhood memories for his mother.  I hope he’s right; it’s a great picture of a New England coastline.  I added a couple of figurals related to Maine: a moose, a bear dropout (last see in my third puzzle), and a lobster.  I also inserted a kite, where the string is just a line cut into the puzzle, with little bows.

Second, the not-so-good -

  1. 1)I tried to cut the lobster tail right on the edge of the puzzle (good idea) but it ended up set into the puzzle by about 1/8” (bad execution).  Hence the odd “cut in” on the right hand side.

  2. 2)I put way too much tung oil on the back and it seeped through some of the cuts (see above the front legs of the Moose).  I found that oil does a good job of loosing the spray adhesive, so I needed to repair a handful of pieces.  Ugh!  I checked every piece by hand and I hope I caught all of the problem ones.

  3. 3)I mis-counted the pieces.  I counted 313 and labeled the signature piece that way, but then noticed two pieces that I hadn’t separated.  So the final total is 314 with a mislabeled signature piece.

  4. 4)I dropped a handful of pieces on the floor.  I’m willing to bet money that I picked them all up ...
