puzzle 54: "Menagerie", Alex Beard, from "Alex Beard Untamed" 2009 Calendar

piece count: 312

measured size: 11 1/2" x 13 3/4"

date cut: 30 December 09

notables: color line cut

disposition: Gabriella

Gabriella was the recipient of puzzle 35; she really enjoyed that puzzle and asked if I’d make her another one.  Of course I would!  I asked if she would like a more difficult puzzle.  The answer was YES.

I may have taken that answer too literally, because this is probably the most difficult puzzle I’ve cut to date.  Every single piece is color line cut.  The color line cutting combined with the fact that the picture is almost like a stain glass window where the image isn’t apparent except in the context of it’s entirety makes this puzzle one for the ages.  I’m believe that Alex Beard made this picture with the intent that it be made into a puzzle.  He has a series of commercially available puzzles that includes a puzzle with this image.  It’s a great piece of art and I was very excited to cut it into a puzzle.

I think I need to take some of Carter’s recent words on the Scroll Saw Woodworking and Crafts forums to heart: “My puzzles are for families to assemble in an evening with ease. I assume your goal here are to baffle people. Both objectives are valid.”  Carter wasn’t referring to me (at least I don’t think so!), but after the Six Piece Trick and this, I’m planning to make a couple of “normal” puzzles for families to enjoy.
